11th Cavalry
But this time we changed our course, and instead of marching southward moved eastward towards Southwestern Virginia, where the field of our military operations lay. Our march was rapid, and evidenced the zeal and determination of our generals to outstrip the rebel forces in East Tennessee,
under command of Vaughn and other rebel officers, which was successfully accomplished and to which we owe much of our success which crowned the expedition. General Gillam's brigade had the advance. We arrived at Rogersville about dusk, where we went into camp and remained three hours for the purpose of allowing the men to cook their supper and feed their horses upon the forage which the rebels, by their industry, had gathered here in large quantities for transportation to the salt works and to Richmond, for which they will please accept our thanks.
